Jerry D. Swertfager left this world to be with his Lord and family on March 22, at the Urbandale Care Center. Jerry was born on July 3, 1946 in Des Moines, IA to Charles and Thelma (Demoss) Swertfager and was a graduate of East High School.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Sherry (Davis), of 26 years. Daughter, Jodi Van Rossum (Dave), son, Chad Swertfager (Reeve) and stepdaughter, Ginger Clark (David). Grandchildren, Jordan Lumley, Michael Van Rossum (Kennedy), Kendall and Kyler Swertfager, Natalie and Cole Ryan Clark and a great grandson, Ryker Van Rossum.
Although he struggled with his health over the past twelve years, Jerry had an immense love for his family, especially his grandchildren. They were his life. His other great love was music. He leaves behind many dear friends he met while playing in numerous bands as well as many lifelong friends made through his work and his breakfast club.
Jerry worked for the Polk County Sheriff Department, the Des Moines Police Department, Des Moines General Hospital as Security Director, and he retired from NPI Security/
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Kay, stepson Todd Hickey, grandparents, aunts, and cousins.
The family would like to thank the Urbandale Care Center staff and Hospice of the Midwest for their exceptional care.
