Jerena Karen Johnson, known to everyone as Karen, of Saylorville, IA, formerly of Colorado Springs, CO, passed away December 8 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.
Karen was born Dec. 24, 1950 in Des Moines, IA to Howard Rolland Johnson and Inez Ilene McNair Johnson. She was raised in Van Meter. Karen graduated from Western Iowa Tech as an electrical designer. She was proud of her work on the first GPS system for the military. Karen moved to Colorado for work, where she made many lifelong friends. Karen joined the LDS church in March 2001, where she was embraced by a loving congregation. Karen moved to Iowa to spend her last days with her sister, Jane, where she was again embraced by a loving LDS community. For many years, Karen found great enjoyment in horses and several beloved cats.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and sister, Irene Kagarice. She is survived by sisters, Jeannie Utsler (Russell), Linda Aldrich, Jane Silvers, and Tam Kagarice; as well as her beloved cat, Weed.
Services are planned for December 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Church, 721 E 1st Street, Ankeny, IA. In lieu of flowers, Karen requests memorials be sent to Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance, 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 2110, New York, NY 10122 in her honor.
