James and Norma met in Ute, Iowa and were united in marriage on November 5, 1950 right before James went off to war. Upon his return they had three children, Steve, Tom and Sue and raised their family on their farm near Mapleton, Iowa. James loved the life of a farmer and watching the Chicago Cubs. Norma worked for 30 years as the secretary to the Maple Valley High School principal. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and crocheting. Their greatest joy was family, especially their grandchildren, and they always enjoyed a good puzzle.

Their grandchildren: Michael Shipley of St. Cloud, MN, Jason (Rebecca) Hasbrouck of Washington DC, Stephanie (Alan) Fountain of Dayton, OH, Josh (Maggie) Opiol of Iowa City, Sarah Opiol of Swisher and Amanda Hasbrouck of Lehigh Acres, FL, Cody Hanson, Travis (Emily) Hanson, both of Atlantic, Kaye Lanie (Ryan) Colling of Granger, Jimmy Flanagan of O’Fallon. Great grandchildren: Jackson & Charlotte Fountain, Kadon, Cammy, Carson & Sarah Opiol, Lily Mahan, Emmett & Olivia Hanson, and Gunnar Colling. Norma is survived by a sister, Lois (Arlo) Buck of Carroll and 2 brothers-in-law, Norman Timm of Ute and Larry Malone of Des Moines. James is survived by a sister, Judy Rafferty of Rockford, IL, a sister-in-law Marilyn Hasbrouck of Chicago and nieces & nephews.
