James & Norma Hasbrouck

James & Norma Hasbrouck, 89 & 87 years old, married for 68 years, were called to Heaven 10 days apart. James passed away on December 3rd at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines and Norma passed away on December 13th at the Taylor House Hospice also in Des Moines.

James was born on November 11, 1929 to Russell & Hazel (Hornby) Hasbrouck. Following his education, he served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Norma was born on March 4, 1931 to Elmer & Leona (Henning) Jacobs and after high school she attended business school in Des Moines. James and Norma met in Ute, Iowa and were united in marriage on November 5, 1950 right before James went off to war. Upon his return they had three children, Steve, Tom and Sue and raised their family on their farm near Mapleton, Iowa. James loved the life of a farmer and watching the Chicago Cubs. Norma worked for 30 years as the secretary to the Maple Valley High School principal. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and crocheting. Their greatest joy was family, especially their grandchildren, and they always enjoyed a good puzzle.

James and Norma are survived by their children, Steve (Jeanne) of Clive, Tom (Teresa) of Lehigh Acres, FL and Sue (James) Flanagan of O’Fallon, MO. Their grandchildren: Michael Shipley of St. Cloud, MN, Jason (Rebecca) Hasbrouck of Washington DC, Stephanie (Alan) Fountain of Dayton, OH, Josh (Maggie) Opiol of Iowa City, Sarah Opiol of Swisher and Amanda Hasbrouck of Lehigh Acres, FL, Cody Hanson, Travis (Emily) Hanson, both of Atlantic, Kaye Lanie (Ryan) Colling of Granger, Jimmy Flanagan of O’Fallon. Great grandchildren: Jackson & Charlotte Fountain, Kadon, Cammy, Carson & Sarah Opiol, Lily Mahan, Emmett & Olivia Hanson, and Gunnar Colling. Norma is survived by a sister, Lois (Arlo) Buck of Carroll and 2 brothers-in-law, Norman Timm of Ute and Larry Malone of Des Moines. James is survived by a sister, Judy Rafferty of Rockford, IL, a sister-in-law Marilyn Hasbrouck of Chicago and nieces & nephews.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Donna Timm & Myrna Malone. James was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Wilbert and a brother-in-law Fred Rafferty. They also lost a son in infancy.

A memorial service in their honor will be held on Saturday, December 22nd at 11:00 am at the Merle Hay Funeral Home Chapel, 4400 Merle Hay Rd in Des Moines. The family will greet friends from 10:00 am until service time. Memorials May be directed to the Taylor House Hospice or the No Veteran Dies Alone Program at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines.
