Gerald LeRoy “Lee” Shaw

Gerald LeRoy “Lee” Shaw, 70, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at EveryStep Hospice (Kavanagh House) from cancer.

Lee was born September 6, 1948 to Gerald and Kathleen (Tate) Shaw in Des Moines. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1966. Lee met his wife, Debbie (McIntosh), at the Iowa State Fair. They were married on December 7, 1968 in Des Moines, and had four children: Missy, Jenny, Maggy and Ben. They enjoyed 40 years of marriage. He became a Grampa for the first time in 1990 and loved each and every one of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all his heart.

Lee had a lifetime career in the auto body industry and thoroughly enjoyed what he did. Even after semi-retiring, he continued to do auto body work in his shop, often for close friends and family, who all knew how meticulous he was. He loved every second of it.  He enjoyed socializing with his many friends and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 2011, Lee found new life with Kathy Layton. They enjoyed winters in Arizona, wine, friends and family.

Lee is survived by three of his children: Jenny Watters of Urbandale, IA, Maggy (Tim) Anthofer of Ankeny, IA and Ben (Beth) Shaw of Des Moines, IA; a son-in-law, John (Ann) Sims of Urbandale, IA; a brother, Gary (Darlene) of Urbandale, IA; fourteen grandchildren, Zach Sims, J.D. Sims, Grant Sims, Mikayla Watters, Michael Watters, Lucy Watters, Thomas Schieffer, Jessica (Josh) Cooper, Jonathon Anthofer, Caleb Shaw, Jacob Anthofer, Jazmine Shaw, Lily Shaw, and Dottie Shaw; six great-grandchildren; many loving extended family and friends and a significant other, Kathy Layton of Des Moines, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Debbie; his first-born daughter, Missy Sims; his oldest granddaughter, Amanda Sims; his brother, Melvin; and his sister, Merry Graham.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the EveryStep Hospice (Kavanagh House) in Des Moines for their support in his final days.
