Spencer Hotek

Spencer Kehl Hotek passed away tragically at the age of 29 on May 25, 2019 after unexplained heart failure.
Spencer is survived by the love of his life, his smart, engaging, and beautiful 3 year-old daughter Kora Hotek. When the heart doctors at the emergency room told him of his need for last resort heart surgery and his small chance of survival, he only talked about his beloved Kora. She occupied his every thought and worry and her name was tattooed on his body.
At his bed-side when he passed was his immediate family: his parents Tim and Deni Hotek of Ottumwa, Iowa, Amanda (Hotek) Burnett of Fenton, Missouri, and Melissa (Hotek) Linebaugh of Des Moines, Iowa.
Spencer had a full belly laugh that was neither short nor quiet. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of movies and tv shows no matter if he had only seen it one-time a decade or more ago. Spencer also loved many kinds of music, including rock n’ roll, rap, and hardcore hiphop. He even performed as a rapper throughout the Des Moines area under the stage name Klown Korleone.
Spencer went to Ottumwa High School and then to Des Moines Hoover High School where he graduated in 2008. He had many friends and prided himself on equality, including being involved with causes such as Black Lives Matter.
Spencer was also the crazy Uncle to his niece and two nephews, taking both of his nephews to professional wrestling matches and teaching them the finer points and moves of all the different wrestlers.
Spencer has many other legendary traits, including unmatched frugality, an unwavering independent spirit, strong work-ethic, and off-the-charts pain-tolerance. In fact, when unbeknownst to him or his family he was suffering from late stage heart failure, he was working two jobs and mowing his lawn despite pain the heart surgeon said would have been debilitating and crippling to anyone else.
Spencer has a tattoo on his body of his paternal grandparents. Family was everything to him. He will now join his paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather in heaven where he will wait to be rejoined by the rest of his family when the time is right. In the meantime, we know he will be missed and loved by all, and we also know he will be watching over his daughter constantly from afar.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 22, 2019 from 1 till 4 at 2110 SE Army Post Road; West Des Moines, Iowa 50265. At 2 we will have some songs and anybody who wants to say anything on Spencer’s behalf is welcome and encouraged to do so.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made for Kora’s benefit to: “Spencer Hotek Memorial” c/o Michaela Johns; Bank of the West; 801 Grand Avenue; Des Moines, Iowa 50309.
