Samuel J. Plecas

Samuel J. Plecas was called home by Jesus his Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 8, 2018. Sam was born to Serbian immigrants, Joseph and Helen Plecas on February 26, 1935. He attended Frisbee Elementary, Roosevelt High School and Des Moines Tech High where he graduated from in1955, then marrying his high school sweetheart, Barbara McIntyre of Hartford. Sam began his furniture career with McIntyre’s Furniture and Design Gallery from 1954 through 1977, he also taught for West Des Moines school’s continuing education program at Drake University. Barbara and Sam purchased Bruce and Carlson furniture in Des Moines and later Bacot Furniture in Ankeny.

In 2015, Sam learned of his former wife’s Alzheimer’s and decided to return home to Iowa from Mesa to assist in the care of Barbara. In August of 2017 Sam became president of McIntyre’ Antiques and collectables located at 817 Grand Avenue in West Des Moines. All who knew him will remember him being the happiest when he could talk with people.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Joseph and two sisters, Violet Enich & Danica “Bessie” Grabavoy. He is survived by two sons, Brad of Mesa and his sons, Ian James & Joseph Samuel, son Reike (Casey) of West Des Moines and their children, Devon & Lara. Sam is also survived by nieces and nephews, Denise (Rex) Grabavoy-Denkman, Danielle (Justin) Denkman-DeLucca, Sasha (Tim) McComas of New Mexico and their children, Gabrielle & Stephen, Gregory (Rebecca) Grabavoy, Alexander (Mary Sue) Grabavoy, George (Magdelin) Enich, Chicago, Jan (Bill) Enich-Taylor Chicago, Nadine (Michael) Enich-Keer, Arizona, sister-in-law Deo Plecas and nieces Kris and Jane as well great nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 16th from 5 to 8 pm at the Cornerstone Family Church, 3114 SW 61st St, Des Moines, a funeral ceremony will be held at 10 am on Saturday, also at the church. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1730 28th St, West Des Moines, IA 50266.
