Ruth Krieman

Ruth Krieman, 75, of Red Oak, Iowa (formerly of West Des Moines) passed away Friday, August 2nd at Red Oak Healthcare Community surrounded by her family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Ruth was born in Des Moines on July 20, 1944. She was the daughter of Kenneth Staker and Mildred (Dailey) Staker. She grew up in West Des Moines and graduated from Valley High School in 1962. She attended Drake University after high school and later went back in her 40s and majored in psychology.

Ruth joined the Navy Waves at Fort Des Moines in 1967 where she met her future husband. Ruth married Walter Krieman on January 20, 1968 and they lived in Norfolk, Virginia until settling back down in West Des Moines in May of 1970.

Ruth had two children, Kris and Jeff, and was a mother to three stepchildren Debby, Steve, and Scott. Even though Ruth and Walter divorced in 1973, the two remained friends. She continued to be a loving mother to her stepchildren and her home was always a safe place they could return to.

Ruth began working for IMT Insurance Company in 1978 in the accounting department. She enjoyed her job and worked there until she retired in 2006 due to Alzheimer’s.

Throughout her life, Ruth was always known for her big brown eyes and her smile that lit up any room. She was the sweetest woman you could ever know. She devoted her whole life to her children and grandchildren. Ruth enjoyed sewing and won several blue ribbons at the Iowa State Fair and also sewed in her spare time to earn extra money for her family. She was a member of West Des Moines Christian Church her whole life. She loved, gave to others and embodied The Golden Rule through her kind actions and words. She was truly a blessing to anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Left to cherish Ruth’s memory are her daughter, Kris (Len) Taylor of Red Oak; son, Jeff Krieman of West Des Moines; stepdaughter, Debby Krieman of Des Moines; stepson, Steve Krieman of Des Moines; Her siblings: brother, Bob (Stephanie) Staker of Brentwood California; sister, Beverly of West Des Moines; brother, Jim (Carolyn) of Oskaloosa; sister, Linda Ayres of West Des Moines; and sister, Janie (Mike) Richmond of Waukee; Her grandchildren, Katie (Mike) Redington of Martelle and Megan Backstrom (Chris Marsh) of Red Oak; Her five great-grandchildren, Gabi, Franky, Matthew, Hannah, and Hunter. She is preceded in death by her ex-husband Walter Krieman, stepson Scott Krieman, her parents. Mildred and Kenneth Staker, brother-in-law Don Anderson, brother-in-law John Ayres, and niece Pam Staker. Memorials may be directed to the family.

“Gram”

Gram, Mom, sister, and a loving friend,

A generous woman on who you could depend.

She was there with thoughtful words after a stumble,

Gave you help and advice, so selfless and humble.

Wrapped you up in tender hugs so sweet,

The friendliest woman you could ever meet.

Warm, brown eyes lit up when she smiled,

Full of warmth and love, a safe lap for a child.

Always had kind words to share,

Such a gentle voice, full of care.

Also quiet but so very strong,

Worked tirelessly for her kids, to carry on.

Her kind-hearted spirit always shone through

In each considerate thing she would do.

She sacrificed things for herself to give to another,

Such a supportive, caring, and devoted mother.

She had a humorous side and a quick wit,

The sweetest chuckle, ‘til she’d go silent.

Her shoulders would shake, full of laughter,

Until we all would join her, shortly after.

Her compassionate heart made you feel at home,

Put in her curlers while I ate my Honeycomb.

A safe place for her kids and grandkids – the whole fam,

Always supported by our generous, loving Gram.
