Olivia Anna Sandvig

Olivia Anna (Landolt) Sandvig passed away in her home September 6, 2018 at the age of 97.  Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, September 11 at Merle Hay Funeral Home.  Her funeral mass will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 12 at Our Lady of the Americas Catholic Church with burial at Chapel Hill Gardens.

Olivia was born October 27, 1920 in Rolfe, Iowa to Nate and Grace Landolt.  She was married to Owen Sandvig for nearly 50 years.  Olivia received her secretarial degree from AIB and worked at U.S. Gypsum in Fort Dodge, Iowa during the war.  Later, she worked as a secretary/accountant with Iowa Limestone and Carbon Coal Company in Des Moines, retiring after 23 years.

Olivia was very active in her children’s lives and St. Michael’s Rosary Society.  She loved gardening, canning, making pickles and jellies, and traveling anywhere.  No one ever left her house empty handed, leaving with something homemade.  Every Saturday night was “Lawrence Welk” night.

Her faith was most important to her, instilling into her family that “God helps those who help themselves.”  As a mother, she encouraged her children to be the best they could be and was always there to help.  She always said, “I’ve had a good life, I’ve met so many good people and was blessed by good friends.”

Olivia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her siblings; and her granddaughter, Jolene West.

Olivia is survived by her children: Bernie Sandvig, Pat (Earl) West, Paula Campbell, and Kirk (Marilynn) Sandvig; grandchildren: Blake West, Dana West, Stephanie (Erick) Peterson, Jason (Tanya) Sandvig, Tanya (Sean) Carroll, and Anthony Rapp, John Sandvig, and Rebecca Sandvig; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and a brother, Arthur Landolt.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the Americas Catholic Church.
