Michelle Miller

Michelle (Meier) Miller 58 passed away on January 27, 2019 at Mercy Hospice Johnston after being diagnosed with brain cancer four months prior.

Michelle was born in Des Moines on August 3, 1960. She grew up in West Des Moines and graduated from Valley High School in 1978. Michelle married Martin (Marty) Miller on April 16, 1987 and they had two children, Kaylee and Alexander.

Michelle dedicated her life to helping people with special needs and she found working with children very rewarding. Prior to graduating from Iowa State University in 1982, Michelle worked at Daycare for Exceptional Children. She then spent her entire teaching career with Des Moines Public Schools as an Early Childhood Special Education Teacher.

Michelle loved working puzzles and word games, reading mysteries, listening to music, watching comedy shows, cooking and above all getting together with family and friends. Michelle enjoyed family vacations to Florida, Colorado, Utah, California, and Alaska. She liked watching sports and rooting for her favorite teams the Iowa State Cyclones and Minnesota Vikings. Throughout her life she enjoyed being active, from high school cheerleading to Spark Plugs Dance Team. Walking, biking, and exercising in her basement gym were part of her daily routine.

Michelle’s family and friends will remember her for being gentle, compassionate, witty, and fun to be around. She will be missed for the many roles she filled: wife, mother, daughter, sister, cousin, niece, aunt, friend, teacher, organizer, accountant, negotiator, disciplinarian, peace-maker, activities coordinator, creative craftsman, head chef, and hostess to name a few.

Michelle is survived by her husband Marty, daughter Kaylee, son Alex, mother Sandra Meier (James Joering), brothers Terry Meier and Randall Meier. Michelle was proceeded in death by her father Robert Meier, grandparents Jack & Margaret Meier, and Ralph & Dorothy Whitcomb.

Her family would like to thank all the people who offered support since Michelle’s diagnosis, including many doctors, nurses, and therapists.

A gathering to celebrate Michelle’s life will be held at a later date. The family requests that any memorials or donations be made to GiGi’s Playhouse Des Moines.
