Mario Anthony Diaz

WEST DES MOINES – “Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise; seek what they sought.” – Basho.

Mario Anthony Diaz was a seeker whose interests were encyclopedic, including art in all forms, natural sciences, current events and practical problem-solving. He loved his family, the San Francisco Giants, jazz and doo-wop, stargazing and birdwatching, good food and wine, and making and recounting memorable moments.

Mario was born June 12, 1953, to Velma and Anthony Prado Diaz, in West Des Moines, Iowa. He was the first of their seven children and he took his role as mentor/ringleader seriously. He graduated from Valley High School in 1971 and worked at Penn-Dixie before moving to San Francisco. There he worked as a painter for, among other sites, the Federal Reserve and San Francisco State University, where he became a proud union steward. He retired in 2013 and, after many years in California, moved back to his hometown.

Mario was preceded in death by his father, Anthony Prado Diaz. He is survived by his son, Anthony Raul Diaz; his mother, Velma Diaz; his brothers Raul, Ronnie (Becky), Doug (Sue) and Tony (Rhonda); his sisters Julie (Tom) and Denise (Greg); his companion, Kathe Connair; nieces and nephews Maria, Michael, Katherine, Christian, Danielle, Nathan and Alex; his grand-dog Bambi, and countless family members and friends near and far. He will be deeply missed.

The family will honor his life with a visitation Thursday, September 27, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd., Clive.

Contributions may be directed to the family; condolences may be expressed at, Brooks Funeral Care location.
