Kay Carr-Kalen

Kay Carr-Kalen passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 27, 2019, after a courageous battle with cancer. Kay was also blessed with being a kidney transplant recipient in Dec. 2010.
Kay retired from Generations Inc. in 2008 after 26 years of service as a CNA and HCA. She volunteered with Kavanagh Hospice House for years and brought comfort to many during her time there. After retirement, helped her daughter, Diane run The Shop Tanning & Nails with her infectious laughter, kindness, and genuine joy in visiting with the clients.
She most enjoyed being with family especially her grandkids and great grandkids, going on cruises with her husband Wayne, reading, antiquing and the flea market.
Kay is survived by her best friend, soul mate, and love of her life, Wayne Kalen, and their beloved dog Henry. Her sister Marcia (Dave) Berhow. Her daughters Diane (Gary) Becker, Cheri Carr, Carolyn (Jim) Mart, Alison (Casey) Doran, and bonus daughter, Brenda Sinclair. Grandchildren Lindsay (Josh), Shawn, Alicia, RT, Eva, Alec, Joel, Leah, Cody, Madi, Paige, Charlee, Andersen, and Scott. Great grandchildren KayLynn, Aiden, Brock, Jaxson, and Savanna. Niece Tarrah (Adam) and their children Kiarra, Kylie, and Kenna. Nephew Zac and his children Zoe, Skylar, Autumn, and Shiloh. Niece Amanda and her children Gavin and Aleah. Brother-in-law Walt (Doris) Kalen and their children Theodore (Mary) and Michelle (Bob). Along with many beloved longtime friends.
Kay is preceded in death by her mother Eleanor Ackerson.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, February 1, 2019 from 5 to 7 PM at Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorial donations be sent in Kay’s honor to the National Kidney Foundation Servicing Iowa, 3850 Merle Hay Rd, Ste 319, Des Moines, IA 50310
