Herbert “Herb” Halls
Herbert “Herb” Halls, 87, of Des Moines passed away on October 3, 2018.
Herb was born September 7, 1931 in Lucas County to Albert and Mabel (Osenbaugh) Halls. Herb fought a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. On a blind date on January 29th, 1951, Herb met the love of his life, Pearl Weaver. They married May 20, 1951 and enjoyed 67 beautiful years together during which they raised 4 children. Herb worked for SuperValu for 47 years. Herb & family were members of St. John Lutheran Church for many years before joining Highland Park Christian Church, where they remained active members. He was a very devoted and patient father, grandfather and great grandfather. Herb’s wishes for his children were that they graduate from high school, as he had not, but did go on to earn his GED. He was always “on-call” day or night. Herb enjoyed coaching little league while his sons were involved. One of his many joys was Boy Scouts where he was a Scout Master, earning the highest honor of the Silver Beaver Award and leading many scouts to the rank of Eagle Scout. At the age of 70, Herb went white-water rafting on the Colorado River. For 25 years Herb was involved with the Saylor Township Volunteer Fire Department as a fire fighter. Herb was a blood donor, donating 15 gallons.
Herb is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth; and brothers, Thomas & Richard.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl; sister, Gladys (Bill) Clark; and brother, James (Mary) Halls; his children, Sandy (Bob) Straker, Russ Halls, Daryl (Denise) Halls, and Sue Halls; his grandchildren, Joe (Kelly) Straker, Nicole Straker, Heidi (Mike) Sams, Matt (Amy) Halls, Kassie Straker, Chelsea (Ben) Schmoll, Daryl Halls II, and Ashley Halls, along with several nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and many other loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Highland Park Christian Church, 4260 NW 6th Dr., Des Moines, IA. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the church. Interment will follow services at Derby Cemetery in Derby, Iowa.
