Evelyn Anderson

Evelyn Lee (Robison) Anderson was born March 17, 1939 in rural Gentry County, Missouri to Leslie Lee Robison and Violet Edna (Cook) Robison. She grew up in the King City area, attending one room schools and graduating from King City High School. She attended Northwest Missouri State College where she earned a degree in Home Economics and Education. She married Ronald Dwaine Anderson in 1961 and subsequently lived in Des Moines; Canton, Georgia; Hurst and Lockhart, Texas; and Hastings, Nebraska, before settling back in the Des Moines area.

Evelyn enjoyed meeting the challenges that came from a varied career. She taught home economics and was a preschool teacher before earning a Master of Science in Education from Kearney State College. She taught at Hastings Junior High School and subsequently worked for the Hastings Area Education Agency. After relocating to Des Moines in 1986, Evelyn worked for Iowa Methodist Medical Center in various capacities, including Manager of Ambulatory Pediatrics at Blank Children’s Hospital and was instrumental in planning the Parent-Infant Nurturing Center at Blank Children’s Hospital. Evelyn also worked for the Iowa Department of Education as Bureau Chief for Community Colleges, a position from which she retired in 2004.

Evelyn was a nature enthusiast and avid photographer, specializing in wildlife photography, with a special interest in birds. She enjoyed participating in community theater and traveling, making trips to national parks, Syria, China, and Jordan, as well as visiting her grandchildren.

Her parents, Leslie and Violet Robison, and a sister, Patricia, predeceased her. Evelyn is survived by her long-term partner, Diana Jarman, and her sons, Matt Anderson of Seattle, Washington, and Joe Anderson of Calgary, Alberta, their spouses Stephanie and Emma, and her four grandchildren, Penn Anderson, Sophie Anderson, Lucy Anderson, and Daisy Anderson. She loved Diana’s daughter Sarah Oden of Fort Worth, Texas as her own and loved Sarah’s children, Kelsey and Geoffrey, as her own grandchildren.

A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Jester Park Lodge, Granger, Iowa, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Evelyn’s name to the Iowa Audubon Society or to the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa.
