Dorothy Von Gillern
Dorothy von Gillern, 99, passed away peacefully, December 11 at Deerfield Retirement Community.
Dorothy was born in January 1918 to Anna and F. L. Goeppinger in Boone. She graduated from Iowa State College (University) in Home Economics (Food and Nutrition) where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.
After college Dorothy moved to Chicago. She worked for the Wheat Flour Institute and was in charge of the Experimental Food Laboratory (test kitchen). She later worked for Meredith Publishing preparing food that was photographed for cook books.
In 1943 Dorothy married Robert F. von Gillern who was a WWII Navy pilot. They had four children and Dorothy was a homemaker. They briefly lived in Fort Dodge, West Des Moines and finally settled in Windsor Heights in 1953. In 1978 Dorothy and Bob moved to Deer Creek in Urbandale and later to Clive.
After her husband died Dorothy moved to the Deerfield Retirement Community in Urbandale.
Dorothy enjoyed her family, Clear Lake, boating and traveling…including many trips to Hawaii where her sister lived. One of her most unforgettable travel memories was that she saw President Kennedy in downtown Dallas only a couple minutes before he was shot on November 22, 1963.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Des Moines Golf & Country Club.
She was preceded in death by son Robert L. von Gillern, husband Robert F. von Gillern, brother Fred W. Goeppinger, and sister Irma Goeppinger.
She will be greatly missed by her children, Ann (Carey) Jury of Clive, Thomas (Cindy) von Gillern of Rock Island and Jon (Robin) von Gillern of West Des Moines; grandchildren Rob, Kristin, Emily, Thomas, Sara, Jon E., Sam and James; great-grandchildren Katelyn, Zach, Noah, Grant, Dillon, Tyler, Jon P., Ariana, Malcolm and Maizy; and nephews Fred L. Goeppinger, and William and Richard von Gillern. She has many Goeppinger and Herman relatives from Boone.
The family thanks very special friends Sylvia and Dooley Baxter of Amelia Island, Florida for their many years of love and support. The family also thanks the Deerfield staff for their help, especially Ruth Ball for her exceptional care in the last two months of Dorothy’s life.
Dorothy will be remembered for her love of family, friends, love of children, cooking with beautiful presentation and her great sense of humor!
A funeral will be held Friday, July 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Faith Lutheran Church 10395 University Avenue Clive, Iowa 50325.
