Don Renier

Donald James Renier of West Des Moines passed away on October 28, 2018 at the Kavanaugh Hospice House with family by his side.

Don was born May 26, 1935, to Marguerite and James Renier.  He grew up in Chicago, spent 20 years in Los Angeles before moving to Des Moines.

Don loved his family, enjoyed fishing, travel, sightseeing and nature. Favorite hobby was fishing which he did in Cuba, Caracas Venezuela, Panama, Alaska, Canada, Costa Rica and Florida. His favorite was Bass Lake, Wisconsin. Another favorite activity was morel mushroom hunting in the spring with his best friend and wife “Ruthie”.

Other hobbies included crossword and jigsaw puzzles and playing golf and gin at The Des Moines Golf and Country Club.

The travel most enjoyed was Switzerland, Germany, Alaska, New Zealand, Australia and Tahiti.

Some of Don’s highlights were a dinner with Nancy Reagan and playing golf, riding in a cart with Lawrence Welk, and singing with Ann Blyth.

He was a University of Notre Dame grad where he was their Mardi Gras Chairman, a member of the Glee Club, on the Notre Dame football team and graduated third in his class.

After graduating from Notre Dame he worked in Chicago for Continental Casualty and was transferred to their Los Angeles office in 1958 as the manager of their office and the West Coast. He became an Investment Broker in 1966 and remained in the investment business for the next 46 years, moving to Des Moines in 1977 with R. G. Dickinson & Co, becoming their office mgr, sales mgr and CEO. He retired in 2012.

He had a passion for Southwestern art and his most relaxing experiences were associated with water –rushing rivers, ocean surfs, lake and ocean fishing all provided the most peaceful times of his life.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Nicholas Renier; his mother, Marguerite Agnes Renier and a stillborn sister. Don is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ruthie; sons Michael Renier (Kelli), Mark Renier (Stephanie); daughters, Lisa Bucciarelli (Joe), Karen Sherwood (Rodney), Terese Reed (Scott); step-daughters, Melissa Miller (Eric) and Lisa Holtman. His 15 grandchildren; Joshua Renier, Luke Renier, Makenzie Renier, A.J. Renier, Fletcher Renier, Noelle Renier, Paige Leck (Chris), Nicole Barla, Samantha Sherwood, Daniel Meinhardt, Chris Miller, Jake Miller, Anna Miller, Emily Miller and Ashley Simonson (Cody).

The family had a private Blessing and Rosary service. They will have a private burial of cremated remains at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery, Mission Hills, California.
