Barbara J. Plecas

Barbara Joan McIntyre Plecas went home to meet Jesus face to face on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. Barbara was born on April 3, 1935 in Des Moines to William Harold & Mildred (Myrick) McIntyre of Hartford, Iowa. She graduated from Valley High School with the class of 1953 and then furthered her education at Stephens Women’s College in Columbia, MO. She married her high school sweetheart, Samuel Plecas, in 1955. The couple resided in an apartment in the West Des Moines City Hall building in Valley Junction that she purchased her senior year of high school. The couple worked together in their furniture stores, while Barbara also worked in the medical field as an office manager. She also completed her BS in Business Administration from Drake. In 1992 Barbara made a career change to a pre-need financial counselor at Merle Hay Funeral Home and Sunset Memorial Gardens, where she enjoyed working with people young and old. Barbara enjoyed collecting many beautiful things: nativity scenes, angels, lions & ducks, along with vintage china, glass & crystal, to name a few. McIntyre Antiques & Collectibles was created to help find new homes for her treasures. She loved her stuff!

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by two sons, Brad, of Mesa and his sons, Ian James of Dallas, TX & Joseph Samuel of Mesa AZ; and Reike (Casey) of West Des Moines and their children, Lara Ellen of Washington DC & Devon Asa of St. Paul, MN. She is also survived by her cousins, Dena (Richard) of Colorado and Myrick (Nina) den Hartog as well as their children.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 16th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Cornerstone Family Church, 3114 SW 61st St, Des Moines. A funeral ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, also at the church. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1730 28th St, West Des Moines, IA 50266.
