Alan Dwight Hummon

Alan Dwight Hummon was born in Findlay, Ohio on November 16, 1926. He died at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic, Iowa on February 12, 2019.

Al grew up in Findlay, Ohio. He joined the U. S. Navy when he was 18 and served as an aviation electronic technician for several years. After leaving the navy, Al became an accomplished iron worker. He worked on a number of impressive buildings including the Vertical Assembly Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and the Contemporary Hotel at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Al was married to the love of his life, Betty, for 65 years and together they raised four children. As they were approaching retirement, Betty and Al moved to Griswold, IA where they quickly became involved in a number of community projects. One of their favorite initiatives was helping build the playground located near the community center.

Al was a voracious reader and an avid mechanical guy. He loved figuring out how things worked and often had multiple projects underway all around the house. He was well known for being Santa Claus given his thick white hair and Christmas beard. His jolly laugh delighted children for many years.

Al will be missed by his two sons, his six grandchildren and his many great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
