Winifred “Winnie” Halupnik was born on March 5, 1922 in Claremont, Minnesota: the daughter of Edward and Margaret (Foley) Duffy. They moved to Voorhies, Iowa and Winnie graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1939. She married Ernest L. Halupnik on September 30, 1944 at the Immaculate Conception Church at Blessing; he preceded her in death in December 1988. Winnie worked as a telephone operator in Voorhies, then later worked at the Russell-Lamson Hotel before her marriage. She and Ernest farmed on the Halupnik homestead one mile north of Traer where they raised four children. Winnie served as a past president of the St. Paul Catholic Church Rosary Society in Traer. She also worked for Sports in Fashion in Traer, and the Novotny Flower shop. Winnie moved to Waterloo to be closer to her daughters in 2003 and had a full and social life with many friends and family. In her younger years, she loved to go dancing, gardening, cooking, fishing and antiquing. Winnie loved anything Irish, Lawrence Welk and Polka. She would take pictures of anything and everything. In 2015 Winnie moved to Mallard Point with additional assisted living help, and flourished until an illness in September of 2016.
Winnie passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home at the age of 94. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers: Ignatious, Ambrose and Gerald Duffy and a sister Regina Beenken. Winnie is survived by two daughters: Delores Halupnik and Kathy (Jim) Flack of Waterloo; two sons: Tom (Cindy) Halupnik of Germantown, Tennessee and Dan Halupnik of Vinton; three grandchildren: Jennifer Flack of New York, Brett (Betsy) Flack of Bloomington, Minnesota and Brad (Jaime) Halupnik of Collierville, Tennesse; four great-grandchildren: Lillian Flack, Hayes, Hudson and Carson Halupnik; three sister-in-laws: Marcy Kostlan, Marian Samo and Dixie Duffy and wonderful nieces and nephews.
