Wilma June Balch

Wilma “June” Balch, of Hawkeye Care Center, Marshalltown, IA, formerly of Johnston, went home to the Lord on Saturday, August 12, 2017. Merle Hay Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. both at Merle Hay Funeral Home. There will be a private inurnment the next day.
June was born January 12, 1932, in Toronto, Iowa, to Mabel (Schenke) and Wayne Fitsimmons. She graduated from Spencer High School and the University of Minnesota. She had a fulfilling career as a medical technologist for over 30 years.
On January 15, 1956, June married Ralph “Pete” Wilkinson. Together they raised four sons and enjoyed their busy life and grandchildren until his death in 1990. March 27, 1995, she married Elvin Balch. They traveled and cared for each other until his death in 2006. June enjoyed many memorable family reunions with Al’s family, and she treasured his children and grandchildren.
June was an avid reader and sports fan, especially the Minnesota Vikings. She loved music, and enjoyed conversation and playing cards. Most important to her were her faith and her family. She was a member of Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, singing in the choir. involved in Mariners and Presbyterian Women. June was a remarkable, determined woman who did not let anything stop her from moving forward. She learned how to walk again at age 62 following a ruptured cavernous angioma in her spinal cord.
June’s humor, kindness, grit and good nature will be missed. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Douglas (Rose) of Castroville, TX; Michael (Sharon) of Cedar Rapids; Jeff (Karen) of Des Moines; and Lee (Michelle) of State Center; step-children Jane (Wes) Licht of Madison, WI; Deb (Bill) Knoll of Dallas Center; Gary Balch of Trenton, Missouri; and Dave (Kim) Balch of Earlham; grandchildren Rebecca (Jerrod) Killian, Jack (Genevieve) Bales, Sean Fabritz, Alissa (Steve) Lotman, Luke (Jen) Wilkinson, Catherine Wilkinson, James Wilkinson, Jessica (Jeff) Clark, Brittany Wilkinson, Blake Wilkinson, Adelaide Wilkinson, Tyler Dralle, Peter Wilkinson, Sam Wilkinson, Shayla Dralle, and Thomas Wilkinson; eight great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many step-grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents, her husbands, and her stepson Elvin Balch, Jr.
Memorials may be directed to Angioma Alliance and Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church.
