William Leo Illing was born December 11, 1944, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, son of Charles and Louise (Hecht) Illing. He graduated from Dwight D. Eisenhower High School of Blue Island, Illinois then entered the United States Army serving from September 1965 – September 1967. In the Spring of 1972, Bill was driving his Jeep when he saw Joan Melinda Cain crossing the street. He stopped and asked her for a date – she said, “yes”. The couple was married on June 30, 1973, and began a family while living in Blue Island. In December of 1982, Bill moved his family to Corwith, Iowa, to provide a safer life with better educational opportunities. He worked as a welder at Hotsy Corporation in Humboldt then began his job as a custodian at the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne High School. Bill loved working at the high school and reached out as a positive role model to any and all of the students there. As one student later recounted, “Bill always had our backs.” His last job was with Winnebago in Forest City. Bill was always ready to go and do ANYthing. He loved Pinochle, fishing, the Chicago White Sox and Bears but most of all he loved eating!
Bill had been ill for many years but met all of the hurdles in stride until Sunday, October 9, 2016 when he fearlessly crossed the finish line with family by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents. Bill is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joan; son, Shane (Valerie) Illing of Jesup, Iowa and daughter, Amy Illing of Thompson, Iowa; brother Gene (Barbara) Illing of Illinois; and his 3 grandkitties: Frankie, Sox, and Daisy.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
