William B. Thompson

January 1, 1934 - January 3, 2017

William B. Thompson, 83, of Valley View Village, Des Moines, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 3, 2017. His funeral will be at 1 p.m., Friday, at Brooks South Town Chapel at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Visitation with the family will be Thursday, January 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the chapel.

 

Bill was born January 1, 1934 in Columbia, Missouri to Edna Bond and Herschel S. Thompson. He grew up in the Des Moines area, residing in Urbandale in 1970 until moving to Valley View Village in 2014.  He married Marilyn Hickman in 1957, and together they had two children.  He worked in the printing industry, and retired from the Des Moines Register.  He had been a member of the International Typographical Union, the Urbandale Lions Club, and the Iowa National Guard.  He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

 

Bill is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, Jon (Julie) Thompson of Urbandale; daughter, Phyllis (Max) Smith of Des Moines; seven grandchildren: Joy Esser, Jennifer Thompson, Jill (Sean) Chapin, Alexis Thompson, Sandra Smith, Katy (Ben) Peterson, and Ryan (Michelle) Smith; eight great-grandchildren; twin brother, Richard (Carol) of Ocala, Florida; and nieces, Shari Stone and Michelle (Craig) Goheen. He was preceded in death by his parents and niece, Sandra I. Thompson.

 

Memorial contributions may be directed to Valley View Village or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
