Vivian, 92, passed away on March 16, 2017 at Kennybrook Village in Grimes. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at Merle Hay Funeral Home. Her family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Vivian Idella, the daughter of Harley and Ruby (Cowley) Jacobsen, was born March 30, 1924 on a farm near Dows, Iowa. She graduated from Dows High School and Hamilton School of Commerce in Mason City. She was employed by Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) for a year and a half. She then decided to be a hairdresser/beautician, and attended Iowa School of Beauty in Des Moines. While attending beauty school she met and married her husband, Phil, who was from Johnston. Over the years, Vivian was employed at State Auto Insurance and Midwest Mutual Insurance, eventually retiring from Preferred Risk (now GuideOne) in 1989.
Vivian took piano lessons as a kid, and she enjoyed playing the organ. She also enjoyed playing cards and was an expert Wii bowler. She also liked to use her computer to keep up with everyone on Facebook. Vivian was a longtime member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church in Johnston.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Phil in 1993; brother, Galen Jacobsen; and sister, Ardis Lemke.
Vivian is remembered by her family: son Alan and his sons, Nathan and Willie; son Craig (Karen) and their daughters, Colleen and Kylie; brother, Doug Jacobsen; and sister, Shirley Zaiger.
