Verena Vorba

February 11, 1930 - June 14, 2016

Verena Jane Vorba was born on February 11, 1930, in Dike, Iowa, the daughter of Mabel and Godfrey Juel.  She graduated from Forest City High School in 1947 and from Iowa State Teacher’s College in 1949.  Verena then taught 6th grade for five years in Grundy Center.  On December 26, 1954, Verena was united in marriage to Harold Vorba at the Methodist Church in Grundy Center.  The couple made their home on the family farm south of Traer, where they lived and farmed for 42 years.  Verena also was a substitute teacher in Traer and Garwin for 42 years.  She was a member of Traer United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, Ladies Auxiliary Club, and Iowana Club.  She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, pot luck with friends, traveling around the United States, IMT Insurance meetings, gardening, baking, collecting Boyd Bears, Terry Redlin prints, and Crystal Friendship Club.  Verena died at the age of 86 on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ariel “Ted” Juel; and a sister, Janet Austin.  Verena is survived by her husband, Harold of Traer; a daughter, Jill (Denny) Berger of Traer; a son, Jed (Lisa) Vorba of Mason City; four grandchildren, Melinda (Trevor) Oberholtz of Rapid City, South Dakota, Scott (Alana) Berger of Cedar Falls, Lincoln Vorba of Mason City, and Morgan Vorba of Mason City; and three great grandchildren, Alora Oberholtz, Reis Berger, and Jaide Berger.

 

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to Verena’s family, a donation will be made at a later date.  Burial will take place at Buckingham Cemetery in rural Traer.
