Susan M. Ramey

Sue Ramey, 59, passed away peacefully at the Des Moines Taylor Hospice House on Thursday October 5th, 2017.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10th, 2017 at Merle Hay Funeral Home.

Susan Michele Johnson, was born to Kenneth Duane Johnson & Charlene Rae Bower on June 20th, 1958.

She is survived by her daughter, Ashley (Steven) and her grandson Malcolm; 3 brothers Craig (Helen), Charles (Lori), and Shayne (Karen) and their families; Along with all of her fur babies, many friends and her work family.

Anyone that knew Sue, knew she was very passionate about her telecommunications job. She started at Meredith Corporation when she was 18 and this October, 2017, would have been her 39 year anniversary. Everyone that had a mobile cell phone or desk phone, knew Sue. She loved being involved with everyone and built quite the work family that she loved SO much, she barely knew what vacation was, and she wouldn’t have wanted it any other way! When she was forced out of the office, she enjoyed spending time with her daughter & being known as Momma Ramey to so many more than her only child, being a crazy cat lady spoiling her fur babies, shopping trips and farmers markets, riding motorcycles, keeping up with 3 brothers and enjoying her independence!

She had been battling breast cancer for many years. She definitely was a trooper & didn’t lose to cancer without multiple long fights. She suffered for far too long, and was taken from us far too soon. She was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 with a complete mastectomy and reconstruction in 2001. She put up a strong battle, completed radiation & chemotherapy and got cleared as in “remission”. After what we thought was a fight she had won and was over, in 2015 the cancer had returned, metastasized and spread to her bones and she received the diagnosis of Metastatic Stage 4 Breast to Bone Cancer. She gave it EVERYTHING she had, very tough will and determined through it all. Completed radiation again, this time even more intense, and multiple different kinds and rounds of chemo. Her body eventually just couldn’t keep up anymore and the cancer spread to the lungs and liver as well. In the end, she spent 3 weeks in the care at Taylor Hospice House and passed peacefully and comfortable, and is no longer struggling or in pain.

Daughter & family would like to thank the John Stoddard Cancer Center, the doctors and nurses at Methodist Hospital, & the wonderful people at Taylor Hospice House. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be given to her family or the ASCPA animal shelter.
