Shirley Darlene Bartlett was born on January 4, 1932, daughter of Kenneth & Cordelia (Walker) Evans in Albert Lea, MN. Her family moved during her childhood from Minnesota to Indiana. As a young adult, Shirley made her way to Waterloo, Iowa, where she worked at Freeman’s Café on Falls Avenue. She caught the eye of one of their patrons and was married to Jerald Duane Bartlett on June 4, 1949 at Falls Avenue Wesleyan Church. Jerry and Shirley made their home in Waterloo where they raised four busy sons. She also worked at J.C. Penney’s as a Sales Associate. Shirley was a very active member at Hagerman Baptist Church of Waterloo where she enjoyed Bible Study and welcomed many visiting missionaries to the Cedar Valley through her years of membership. She was a funny and sweet lady who never said an ill word about anyone. Her family was her greatest pride and joy. Even in more recent days when Shirley’s memory wasn’t always reliable, she knew all about her family members – where they lived and the activities in which they were currently involved.

Shirley passed away at Pinnacle Specialty Care of Cedar Falls on Friday, March 24, 2017, at the age of 85 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Richard Evans; grandson, Ben Bartlett; and 2 great-grandchildren, Charlie & Bailey Bartlett. Shirley is survived by her husband, Jerry; 4 sons: Dave (Linda) Bartlett of Cedar Falls; Ron (Carol) Bartlett of Waterloo; Mike (Gail) Bartlett of Tea, SD; Craig (Rosanne) Bartlett of Loganville, GA; 2 sisters: Marjorie Bartlett of Waterloo, IA, Linda (Tom) Close of Fairbanks, IA; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Shirley will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Memorials may be directed to Hagerman Baptist Church of Waterloo.
