Sam P. Sciarrotta

August 10, 1939 - January 31, 2016

Samuel Peter Sciarrotta, 76, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Mercy Hospice from cancer. Funeral mass will be at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2016. Visitation will be at Merle Hay Funeral Home at 4400 Merle Hay Road from 4-7pm on Wednesday. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm.

Sam was born on August 10, 1939 to Peter and Nancy (Tangari) Sciarrotta, in Des Moines, Iowa. Sam graduated from St. John’s Parochial School and the Dowling High School class of 1957. Sam lived his entire life in Des Moines. Sam has worked for Mercy Hospital for the last 24 years, and had worked for Chrysler, Westinghouse, and Allis Chalmers credit agencies, as well as operating his own businesses over his long working career. Sam was still employed when placed in hospice.

Sam is survived by his children, Pete (Sherri) Sciarrotta of Newton, and Sherry (Matt) Lynch of Johnston; grandchildren, Michael (Jackie) and Matthew (Christa) Lynch, Anna (Taylor) Layton, and Micaela Sciarrotta; great-grandchildren, Lynnsey and Logan Maples, Kylie, Brianna, and Madison Lynch, and Reuben Layton. Also, sisters, Carmella Sciarrotta O’Neal, Rachel (David) Helkenn, Lucia (Cal) Stout, Fran Sciarrotta Morgen, and a brother, Joe (Debbie) Sciarrotta, along with many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Sam was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Peter and Nancy (Tangari) Sciarrotta, and grandparents, Sam and Carmela (Costantino) Sciarrotta in Des Moines, and maternal grandparents, Francesco and Rachel Tangari in Terravecchia, Italy.

Sam was a devout Catholic and ushered at St. Mary’s. He was a very conservative person and still would not eat meat on Friday. He will be missed by his large family and many friends. Sam was a Cubs fan
