Sally Ann Rhoads died peacefully on Thursday at the Edencrest Assisted Living Community in Johnston, IA after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 81. Sally was born in Des Moines on August 27, 1935 to John and Roberta McClure.

Sally was involved in many activities throughout her childhood, including golf, synchronized swimming and rope jumping. She graduated from Des Moines North High School in 1953. After high school, she attended the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and later graduated form Drake University with a degree in education.

Sally married her high school sweetheart, Rodney E. Rhoads, on November 21, 1956. They settled down in Des Moines where Sally had a number of different jobs over the years, including substitute teaching in the Des Moines School District and working in human resources at Lutheran and Mercy hospitals. She retired at the Principal Financial Group.

After retirement, Sally started the job she loved the most – taking care of her grandchildren. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed spending time with all of her family.

She is survived by her husband Rodney, sons Timothy (Julie) Rhoads of Marshalltown, Todd (Michele) Rhoads of Des Moines, daughter Tina (Carl) Rogers of Johnston, six grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Michael O’Connor and staff, Edencrest Assisted Living and Unity Point Hospice for all their help.
