Ruth Elizabeth Claassen

Ruth Elizabeth Claassen 94, of Grundy Center, passed away on July 21, 2017, with family at her side, at Arlington Place Grundy Center while under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice. Memorial visitation will be at 5:30 pm at the Reformed Church of Stout with services to follow at 7 pm.

Ruth Elizabeth (Meester) Claassen, daughter of Joe J. & Gertie Meester was born February 15, 1923, in rural Parkersburg, IA. Ruth Attended Pleasant Valley #6 rural School where she graduated from the 8th grade.

On February 19, 1948, she was united in marriage to Clarence Claassen at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church parsonage. After their marriage, they farmed in Lincoln township and lived there until 2007 when they moved to Grundy Center.

Ruth enjoyed helping Clarence with the farming when needed and tending her chickens and raising ducks for many years. She had a large garden from which she canned a lot of produce. She liked to crochet and do embroidery. Ruth liked to watch the birds and “talk” to them. She could whistle certain bird calls and the birds would answer back.

She was a lifetime member of the Reformed Church of Stout where she participated in several women’s groups.

Ruth enjoyed visits with her family and grandchildren and great grandchildren at family gatherings.

Ruth is survived by her children Janet (WM R.) Aswegan of Grundy Center and John (Nancy) Claassen of Waterloo, IA; grandchildren: Seth Aswegan, AJ (Amanda) Aswegan of Grundy Center, Staci (Brent) Schipper of Wellsburg; Katie Claassen of Cedar Falls, Brian (Leah) Claassen of Bondurant, IA; great grandchildren: Addison Claassen, Emmalie, Ethan, Andrew, Ellanie, Kayleigh, Ellis, Zachary, Abigail Aswegan, Brogan Ellis-Schipper & Dylan Schipper; and one sister-in-law Deloris Eilers of Grundy Center, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her infant son, Dennis Jay; her parents; husband Clarence; brothers: Herman (Lena) and Jacob (Alma) Meester; sisters: Annie (Heye) Buskohl, Trena (Ted Theiss) Schnell, Bena (Henry) Wolters, Martha (Jerry) Eilderts, Henrietta (Johann) Luhring, Lydia (Albert) Kolder, Esther (Jacobus) Hemmen, and several nieces and nephews.
