Rosemary Abbott

October 19, 1921 - December 3, 2015

Rosemary Abbott, 94, went to be with her Lord on December 3, 2015 at Kavanagh House on 56th in the presence of her family. She was born on October 19, 1921 to Thomas and Ellen Birmingham in Chicago, Illinois. She was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy and Mercy School of Nursing. Rosemary served our country during WWII as an Army Nurse in England during the aftermath of D-Day. She rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After the war, she married the love of her life, C. Ray Abbott. They spent their lifetime in Des Moines raising 6 children.

Rosemary was the first woman to become an active member of the VFW in Des Moines. She spent the majority of her nursing career as an OB nurse at Mercy Medical Center until her retirement in 1986. Upon her retirement, Rosemary helped establish First Birthright in Iowa and served as director. She was a member of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish. Rosemary enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and growing closer to God.

Rosemary is survived by her daughters, Mollie Bowman of Las Vegas and Peggy Wood of Des Moines; sons, Mike (Rhonda) Abbott of FL, Dan Abbott of AZ, Joe (Marilyn) Abbott of TN, and K.C. Abbott of Des Moines; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Karen Abbott of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, C. Ray Abbott.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish, 1230 Merle Hay Rd, Des Moines. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Birthright.
