Robert J. Sauerman

Robert Junior Sauerman, 88, lost his battle with cancer at home on December 3, 2017. Born February 15, 1929 to Henry Agar and Mildred Violet (Albee) Sauerman in Newton, Iowa, Bob moved to Des Moines at age 7.

Bob worked at his Dad’s Mobil service station at East 2nd and Grand from age 11, took it over at age 20, added the Conoco across the street, and stayed for 30 years. Afterward, he worked in auto service, finally as a courier for Iowa Paint for 13 years.

Bob drove anything from motorcycles to semis. He loved cars and was a master auto and truck mechanic, carpenter, electrician, plumber, and welder. He could fix anything and did generously for everyone. He was also a gardener; roses were his specialty. Camping, boating, and traveling with his wife, Norma, and his family were his respite. He loved his special dog, Lucky, his friend and companion he got from the ARL.

Bob is survived by his daughters, Nancy (Bruce) and Linda (Tom); four grandchildren, Brian (Shawna), Kori, Rachel (Ben), David (Jennifer); six great-grandchildren, Spenser, Alex, Brock, Payton, Kaci, and Malikai; many nieces and nephews, and lady-friend, Gloria Bouvier. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Norma Jean; his parents; parents-in-law, Marion and Laura Ward; brothers and sister, Max (Ginny), Charles (Myrle & Darlene), Margie (Walt); brother-sister-in-law, Charles Ward and Phyllis Batton; sons-in-law, Ed Moreland and William McCormick; nieces, Geri Rae and Laura Lee.

The heartache of losing this good man, husband, father, grandpa, and friend is almost more than we can bear, but Bob’s legacy is a multitude of fixes and a family unit that will withstand the sadness as we draw our strength from the love we have for each other. We have all been so blessed to have the precious gift of Bob’s love and kindness in our lives. Robert Sauerman, we keep you forever in our hearts.

There will be a memorial service in Bob’s honor at the Merle Hay Funeral Home Chapel, 4400 Merle Hay Rd, on Saturday, December 9th, at 10:30 am. Burial of cremated remains will be in the Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery.

Bob’s family wants to thank Dr. Buroker and nurses for their care and comfort. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
