Robert E. (Bob) Barks

February 16, 1928 - April 12, 2016

Robert E. (Bob) Barks, of Pine Circle in Urbandale, IA, died on April 12 of 2016 at Calvin Community Health Care Center. Memorial services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 3010 52 nd St., Des Moines, IA on Monday, April 18, at 10:30 am, where he was a member since December 1954. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday, April 17, from 5 to 7 pm. Inurnment will be at the Chapel Hill Gardens, Des Moines, IA.

Bob was born and raised in Orange City, Iowa the son of Clarence Lee and Leone Mae Barks and moved to Des Moines after his marriage to Kathryn Evans on August 29, 1954. Prior to his marriage he served for 2 years in the U.S. Navy following WWII, received his B.S. Degree in math and physics from Morningside College, served in the U.S. Navy for 22 months during the Korean conflict, and received his M.S. Degree in math from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He was a retired company officer with USLife Systems and the Principal Life Ins. Co. The 14 years with USLife Systems was sandwiched into 23 years with Principal (formally Bankers Life). He was a former member of the Greater Des Moines Society of LOMA Fellows, a retired member of the Iowa Actuaries Club, and a member of the Hillcrest Country Club, Adel.

He served on the board and several committees at his church where he was a member and at one time was the president of the congregation. He sang in the church choir for many years and played in the church’s brass group. He also played in the Greater Des Moines Community Band for 25 years. His hobby was woodworking and his passion was golf, where he played for a number of years in a league at his golf club and with the Central Iowa Seniors. He also played many couple’s tournaments with his wife, Kay.

He was predeceased by his wife, Kathryn, his parents, his son, Brian, and his sisters, Harriet and Margaret. He is survived by his daughter-in-law Catherine of Urbandale, children, Christopher and Eric; and son Bradley (Melissa) of Wildwood, MO, children, Justen (Jennifer), Elizabeth and Susan.
