Robert A. Crane

April 26, 1940 - December 31, 2016

Robert Allen Crane, “Bob”, age 76, of Johnston passed away Saturday, December 31.  Bob was born on April 26, 1940 to Giles and Zora Crane in Brookings, South Dakota. He graduated from Glenville High School, in Glenville, MN in 1958.  He went to Iowa State Teachers College on football and track scholarships, graduating with a BA in Physical Education and Mathematics.  He later earned a Master’s in Business Administration from UNI.   Bob and Carol (Hendrickson) were married in 1961.  Bob joined the US Marine Corps in 1962 and served for 26 years including three tours in Viet Nam.  He retired as a Colonel earning numerous honors including purple hearts, bronze star, and legion of merit among others.   Post his military career, Bob was the senior technology officer for Sprint, ERC and Guide One, where he retired.

Bob loved competing in sports, hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, being in the outdoors with his friends and watching his grandchildren grow up. He was active in the community, his church and his alma mater.  He was known by his family and friends for his quick wit and very giving spirit.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carol (Hendrickson), of 55 years, two children Diane Bridgewater (Gary) of Johnston, Rob Crane of Colorado Springs, three grandchildren, Hailey and Eric Bridgewater and Tristin Crane. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Wangen of Northwood, IA.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Zora and Giles Crane, and his brothers, LaDon and Dick Crane.

Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00 on Friday, January 6th and services will be Saturday, January 7th at 11:00 am, both at St James Lutheran Church in Johnston.  Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Future Building Fund.
