Richard Russell Smith

Richard Russell “Dick” Smith, 80, passed away at home on November 5, 2017 after an extended illness.  A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at Community Church of Christ Church, 4504 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, Iowa.

Born on March 11, 1937 to Russell and Marlys (Anderson) Smith in Des Moines, Iowa, Dick was a 1955 graduate of North High.  He spent his early years working at the Smith family dairy, Hi-Lan Dairy in Oak Park.  After graduation, he was an Iowa Highway Patrolman for 17 years before moving to Colorado.  After spending 15 years in Colorado, he returned to Iowa and worked security for the Des Moines Public Schools and was a special needs bus driver for West Des Moines Schools.  Dick’s greatest joys in life were riding motorcycles, traveling, and cheering on the Hawkeyes and Cyclones.

He enjoyed working with his hands in his workshop and garage.  He was a member of the Des Moines Restoration Branch (RLDS), where he cherished his church family.

Dick is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Kent (Pam), Khristy Smith, Tami (Cory Stewart) Madore, Julie (LeRoy) Williams, and Norien Lyons; sisters, Pat Taylor, Jeri (Larry) Miller, Kaye Gilles, and Linda Corell; brother, Everett (Mary Kaye) Smith; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his infant son, Kurt; his parents; and son, Jerry Lyons.

Memorials may be made to the family in loving memory of Richard.
