Richard M. Stevenson

August 12, 1926 - April 15, 2016

Richard passed away on April 15, 2016.  Richard was born August 12, 1926 in Lorain, Ohio to Golda Bethel Stevenson and Charles E. Stevenson.  Richard grew up in Lorain.  In High School, his sports were baseball, basketball, and tennis, and he was honorable mention basketball, as an all-state player in the 1943-44 season.  Richard enlisted in the Navy following high school graduation and served from 1944-46.  Richard enjoyed playing baseball as short stop at Kent State from 1947 to 1950.  He continued to play softball with his sons, and tennis and golf throughout his life.  Richard was an avid Detroit Tigers and Iowa State fan.
Richard graduated from Kent State University, in 1950, and met his first wife, Martha Shingler, in 1948 while attending KSU, and they married in 1951.  Richard worked for Safeco in insurance claims living in Cleveland, OH; Kalamazoo, MI, and Indianapolis, IN, moving to Des Moines in 1971.  Martha passed away in 1980.
Richard and Cinda were married in May, 1981.  He worked for The Statesman Group and retired from Hawkeye Security Insurance, as Assistant VP of Claims in 1993.
Richard has been a member of West Des Moines Christian church since 1971 and served as Chairman of the Board during their building campaign at the 8th Street location, and as Elder, Trustee, and various other functional department chair positions.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Shingler Stevenson; his daughter, Holly Ann Stevenson; a brother, Kenneth B. Stevenson, and two sisters; Marcia Gow and Gladys Camp.
Richard is survived by his wife, Cinda; his children Mark Stevenson, Todd (Carol) Stevenson, Quay (John) Mitchell, Chad (Lori) Stevenson; and 14 grandchildren, Meghan, Natalie, Nicole, Luke, Jake (Stevenson), Chandler, Logan (Stevenson), Caitlin, Holly, Chloe (Mitchell), Andy, Molly, Ryan (Stevenson), and Bobby (Marquis).
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to his church.  A Celebration of Life service will be held at West Des Moines Christian Church on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 10:00am with a visitation beginning at 9:00am.
