Raymond Smajd

October 7, 1926 - September 19, 2016

Raymond, 89, passed away September 19, 2016 in St. Paul, Minnesota. A mass celebrating his life will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church (OLIH) in Ankeny with interment at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, October 21, at OLIH.

 

Raymond Frank Smajd, the youngest son of Michael and Anna Smajd, was born October 7, 1926 in Joliet, Illinois.  He grew up in Rockdale, Illinois and graduated from Rockdale High School.  Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served during WWII.

 

He and his wife, Shirley, moved from Illinois to South Dakota, and eventually settled in Ankeny.  He retired from Curtis Industries as a salesman.  Raymond was a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Bears fan.  He especially loved his family.

 

Raymond is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; daughter, Debbie Campbell; sisters: Mary, Ann, and Fran; infant sisters, Anna and Angela; and brothers: Joseph, Albin, William, and Carl.

 

Raymond is survived by his children: Raymond Smajd, Jr. (Lorri), Patty Redden (Stu), Mary Gramke (Stan), Shelly Burke, Kathy Shonkwiler (Brent), Sue Bailey (Mike), Mike Smajd, and Shirley Smajd; 18 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

 

Memorial contributions may be given to OLIH.
