Philip Walter Mitchell was born on the family farm on July 3, 1923, in Geneseo Township, son of Claude and Sara (Burr) Mitchell. He was raised with his seven brothers and sisters and attended schools in Geneseo. Following high school graudation, Philip remained on the farm beginning a lifetime of stewarding the land. He was a member of the Geneseo United Methodist Church and Farm Bureau. Philip enjoyed genealogy and in 2005, he left the farm for a trip to Ireland to visit the original Mitchell family farm where he enjoyed the opportunity to labor on the land of his forefathers. For the last year of his life, he resided at Sunrise Hill Care Center of Traer but continued to supervise and participate on the farm as often as he could.

Philip passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Covenant Medical Center at the age of 93 years following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters: Fanny Mitchell and Edith Mitchell; 4 brothers: Robert Mitchell, Frank Mitchell, Norman Mitchell and Roland Mitchell; and a niece, Claudette Sharp. Philip is survived by his brother, Herald (Elsie) Mitchell of Dysart; many beloved nieces and nephews: Dennis Mitchell, Norma Owens, Sally O’Neill, Wade Mitchell, Drew Mitchell, Mindy Thompson, Craig Mitchell, Brent Mitchell, Ken Mitchell, Sharon Wetrich, Cindy Wendt, Judd Mitchell, Tom Mitchell, Randy Mitchell and Joleen Nechanicky; and many more great nieces and nephews.

Philip will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorials may be directed to Geneseo United Methodist Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
