Peggy (Irving) Lukenbill died in her sleep Monday, January 16, at the age of 60, after a long fight with heart disease.
Peggy was born January 20, 1956, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital to Colleen and Paul Irving. She lived her entire life in Des Moines as a proud Eastsider, born and raised. After graduating from East High School in 1974, Peggy attended Grandview College. She and daughter Amy are members of Capitol Hill Christian Church.
Peggy had two jobs as an adult, both of which she enjoyed and changed her life significantly. She worked many years at HyVee in Ankeny where she met the love of her life, Mike Steinbach. At the time of her death, Peggy had been with the Polk County Sheriff’s office just shy of 14 years.
The greatest joy for Peggy was her family – especially the kids. If she wasn’t playing in the snow or at the beach with the grands, she was taking the older ones to a rock concert somewhere. For Morgan’s (her oldest grandson) high school graduation present last year, she rented a muscle car and just the two of them took a road trip west! Amy and Gayla will miss her on the annual trip to the Miss Amazing Pageant in Omaha/Council Bluffs.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Merle Hay Funeral Home (4400 Merle Hat Road in Des Moines) at 11:00 am, and will be officiated by Rev. Blake Blakesley and Polk Co. Sheriff Chaplain Jerry Van Cleave. Family visitation will precede the service at 10:00 am.
Peggy was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents Paul and Colleen Irving, and lifelong friends (and pseudo parents) George & Joyce Blakesley and Stan & Betty Ring. She is survived by fiancé Michael Steinbach (Jeremy & Christina); two daughters Jessica (Zlatko) Kendic and Amy Lukenbill; four grandchildren Morgan Powell, Niko and Ella Kendic, and Madilynn Steinbach; siblings Gary Irving and Gayla Irving; niece Karen DeWild and her family, plus lifelong friends/pseudo siblings Susan Eisenhour, Blake Blakesley, Scott Blakesley, and Margaret Blom.
Cards may be sent to the family at 1341 E. 26th Street, Des Moines IA 50317. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Peggy’s name to Easter Seals of Iowa, Iowa Special Olympics, or Heart Association.
