Patricia “Patty” A. Ptasnik McCue, of Des Moines, 69, went to meet her Lord and Savior on April 2, 2016 in Johnston, IA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m., Friday, April 8, 2016 at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church.
Patricia Anastasia Jones was born October 25, 1946 to Dorothy (Maloney) Jones in Worcestor, Massachusetts. She later became the step-daughter of Mr. Wallace Jones. She attended grammar school at the Sisters of Mercy St. Paul’s school and Sacred Heart Academy High School both in Worcester, MA. In 1995, Patty made the Deans List at Drake University while taking classes in Literary Studies and US History Sciences. She loved history!!
She served as a physician’s aid while enlisted in the United States Navy, beginning in 1970. She met Darrell Lee Ptasnik in the Navy and they married in 1971. She was then honorably discharged in 1972 with a National Defense Service Medal. Patty and Darrell adopted two children from Bogota, Colombia, Mary-Kate and Matthew within the next several years.
Patty worked in the telecommunications industry for over 30 years, rising to a supervisory position with Century Link, formally known as North Western Bell and Qwest. She also worked for Creative Corner, aka “The Pink House” and the Quilt Block. She had her own business called Goldie’s Treasures where she was a Hand Quilting Specialist, dealing in sales for specialty handmade items. Over the years, she had spent many hours making items for charities, non profits and raffles all over the country. Items such as Hospice Angels for those who had lost there loved ones. She made baby hats and burial robes for babies born sleeping. Patty was a board member and former president of the Des Moines Knitting Guild, Quilters Guild and the Weavers and Spinners Guild. She has also worked with the Iowa Sheep and Wool Festivals in the past.
Patty was an avid baker, quilter, knitter, spinner, and weaver. Patty has won multiple awards at the Iowa State Fair for her quilting and knitting. She also thoroughly enjoyed making and gifting things for others. She had a huge place in her heart for animals and over the years she had many dogs and several cats.
She was a committed Lector at St. Theresa of the Child of Jesus and assisted in several other areas of the church as well. Her committed faith, service and love for the Lord was well known among her friends, family and church community. She will always be remembered for her love and compassion for others. She loved to give!
She will be missed by her children, Mary-Kate Gales of Los Angeles, CA and Matthew (Sarah) Ptasnik of Des Moines; grandchildren, Connor, Mia, Greyson, Jude and one on the way; her fiancé, Edward McCue; good friends, Sherry Gales, Janeen Manatt, MJ Rozendaal, Pat Abbitt Bonnie Dufault, Gregory Mc Williams and Jeffrey Jensen; the quilting and knitting community; and her miniature schnauzer, Matilda who will miss her dearly as they shared such a loving bond! Matilda will stay in the family.
A visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, April 7 at St. Theresa Catholic Church with a rosary to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. The family would like to acknowledge the Nazareth Home with the sisters of Mercy in Worcester, Massachusetts. The sisters were very near and dear to Patty’s heart!
