Monty Stratton VerSteeg, 76, passed away from Pulmonary Fibrosis on August 2, 2016 at Taylor House in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at Merle Hay Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 9, 2016. Family will greet friends beginning at 2:00 PM.
Monty, the son of Nick and Goldie VerSteeg, was born February 27, 1940 in Des Moines, IA. He began setting records from the time he was born weighing 14 pounds. Monty graduated from North High School where he played football and basketball. Newspaper articles told of his impressive size but most importantly also mentioned his love of life and people. He attended Parsons College in Fairfield, IA from 1959-1961 and played in The Mineral Water Bowl. At 6’3” 325 pounds, he held the distinction of being the largest lineman in college football in 1961. Although he received invites from NFL teams, Packers, Bears and Cardinals, Monty chose a career working for The City of Des Moines in the Parks Department. He was a hard worker, responsible and trustworthy and enjoyed his life’s work with the city for 33 years, making many lifelong friends.
In 1987 Monty married Alice Killham, they were happily married for 27 years before her passing in 2015. Monty loved hunting, fishing and being outdoors. He meticulously cared for his home, lawn and garden. He was a gentle giant who loved spending time with his wife, visiting his kids and playing with his grandkids. Monty was a great friend and had many. He enjoyed playing cards, sharing stories, eating out and keeping in touch with his past co-workers, football buddies and his Phi Sig Frat Brothers.
He left a Legacy of love, hard work, laughter, friendship and family. A big guy with an even bigger heart!
Monty is preceded in death by his parents, a brother and his wife Alice.
He is remembered by his sister Marcene Monsoor of WI; Son, Scott (Robin) Killham of AR; Grandchildren, A.J. (Kristin) and Micayla; Great-Grandson, Crosby; and three nieces and a nephew.
A special thank you to Unity Point Hospice, Taylor House and Vintage Hills for the love and care provided.
