Monte Brown

Monte Brown of Des Moines died September 13, 2017 in the company of his wife, Marianne Gideon and his best friend, Sammy the cat.

Monte was born in Des Moines in August of 1927 and grew up poor moving to a number of different family homes in Iowa. After graduating from Greenwood, Hubbell and Roosevelt High School in 1945 he joined the Navy with three other classmates all of whom survived him. The war ended while they were still in boot camp.

His service allowed him to go to Drake on the G.I. Bill where he got a degree in journalism. That allowed him to write for a magazine that had him traveling the country selling advertising and instilled his passion for travel. Later he went back to school and got a MSW which helped him sell even more advertising and become a favorite friend to confide in.

He enjoyed friends, travel, gold, biological and proximal family. He lived in Des Moines, Chicago, Ocean City, NJ, and returned to Des Moines. He loved to travel and was a master at making friends all over the world.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne Gideon, three daughters: Joann Michael, Janet Brown, and Julia Brown Connell; those international friends and his special Des Moines friends. When going to someone’s house or a social function, Monte always said he should leave before they wanted them to. He did.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the ARL, IPTV, IPR, or UnityPoint Hospice.
