Miriam A. E. Flattery passed away peacefully at home with her family on October 23, 2016. She was 87 years old. Miriam was born to Walter and Anna Peterson on October 14, 1929 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She grew up in Swea City, Iowa. Miriam graduated from Swea City High School in 1947. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage and Lutheran upbringing.
Miriam graduated from Iowa Lutheran Nursing School in Des Moines in 1950 as a R.N. She married Mark E. Flattery on October 3, 1959, at which time she left nursing to raise her family. She returned to nursing in 1981 and retired in 1987. Miriam enjoyed outdoors, tending to her flowers, the moon, family reunions, and nurses reunions. In her later years she also added the joy of being surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by daughter, Ann M. (Flattery) Foxhoven; sons: Mark D. (Dyann) Flattery and Russ Flattery all of Des Moines; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings.

Miriam’s family will greet friends from 2-3 p.m., Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd. in Clive. There will be a memorial service at 3, followed by her interment at Glendale Cemetery.
