Michael “Wally” Wellendorf

Michael Jon “Wally” Wellendorf, 57, of Des Moines, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Mercy Medical Center.

Michael was born to Judyth Gaddie and Donald Wellendorf on May 18, 1960, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Davenport, Iowa. Born six weeks premature, Michael made a habit of beating the odds early in life. In the spring of 1965, Michael underwent experimental heart surgery at the University of Iowa Hospital. And later in life he fought another battle having a brain tumor removed June 9, 2017, and as his fiancée says, “He rocked that recovery!”

In May of 1978 he graduated from Indianola High School. Michael was a journeyman lineman with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 55 in Des Moines. His 37-year career was near and dear to his heart. He traveled all around the country for his work including California, Hawaii, Texas, Florida, Louisiana and the East Coast. He was always one of the first lineman called out for storm duty to help restore customers’ power. Michael loved being a lineman!

When Michael was in town, he never missed a union meeting. He loved leading his union members in the annual Labor Day Parade in downtown Des Moines.

During his later teenage years, if Michael was without a car or money, it wasn’t a problem as his favorite mode of travel was hitchhiking across America. He loved NASCAR and watching crime dramas on television. And he loved his Harley Davidson motorcycle, Blackie. During his time in Texas he even owned a pet bobcat. Michael loved life and lived it to the fullest every day!

He married Marguerite West in May of 1994. They were divorced in 2016.

Michael is survived by his fiancée, Catherine Stout, of Des Moines; his parents, Judyth and Delbert Gaddie, of Des Moines; Donald Wellendorf, of Winterset; one brother, Joseph A. Wellendorf (Loretta Thrane) of Des Moines; one sister, Mary Halstrum (Kevin), of Winterset; two nieces, Katharine Halstrum and Rachel Halstrum, of Winterset; one nephew, Joseph D. Wellendorf, of Des Moines; one great nephew, Joseph D. Wellendorf Jr., of Des Moines; and one uncle, J.B. Adleman, of Davenport.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, and he will never be forgotten!
