Michael Merklin

December 13, 1954 - February 9, 2016

Michael “Mike” Leonard Merklin, 61, of Des Moines, passed into the hands of our lord on February 9, 2016.

Mike was born December 13, 1954, to Peggy Cox and Gene Merklin in Milan, Missouri. He attended Lincoln High School in Des Moines and Des Moines Technical High School before moving to Tacoma, Washington.

Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Jolon, California, where he served as a firefighter until he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident at age 18. He was honorably discharged as retired, Private 2nd Class, with a National Defense Service Medal and a Markman’s Badge.

Among Mike’s hobbies were cars, especially 1940 Chevy Coupes, and he eventually found one and had it restored.

Mike leaves behind a loving mother, Peggy Thorne of Des Moines, who cared for him after his accident for over 40 years; sister, Kathy Thacker of Dallas; stepsister, Linda (Lauren) Call of Waterloo, Iowa; stepbrothers, Mike Thorne of Wills Point, Texas, and Terry Thorne of Quinlan, Texas; nephew and niece, Trevor and Shelby Thacker of Dallas; aunt, Eva (Arthur) Smith of Cincinnati; and many cousins. His father, Gene Merklin, and stepfather, Frank Thorne, preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America – Iowa Chapter and/or online condolences may be submitted at www.iowafuneralplanning.com
