Mary (Wittrig) Sherer

Mary Sherer, 97, died on April 11, 2017. She was born in Wayland, IA, on November 23, 1919, to Edward and Mabel (Wenger) Wittrig. She received her undergraduate degree from Parsons College and her Master’s Degree from Drake University. She taught in several schools, including Urbandale High School, where she was a teacher and guidance counselor for over 30 years before retiring.

Mary was an active member of Urbandale United Church of Christ, participating in choir, teaching Sunday School, and leading an Alzheimer’s support group. She was involved in many community groups including: Lioness, Delta Kappa Gamma, Soroptimist, Church Women United, and served on the Polk County Rape and Sexual Assault Board. Her volunteer activities included the Red Cross, Iowa Lutheran Hospital and the Senior Citizens Advisory Board in Urbandale. To acknowledge her community involvement, she was named Urbandale Citizen of the Year in 1995. But her passion was being a champion of educational opportunities to meet the needs of all ages, abilities, and interests through a strong guidance and education program. She was involved in the State Vocational Education Advisory Council, the Iowa Personnel Guidance Assn., the Iowa School Counselors Assn, Des Moines Area Retired School Personnel Assn, and the Iowa Vocational Assn. She was a leader in establishing the Urbandale Citizens Scholarship Fund.

In 2004, Mary moved to Indianola and lived at The Village retirement community where she stayed involved in resident activities. Her hobbies were reading, traveling, and music.

Most of all, Mary valued and cherished her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We will miss our mom, grandma and great-grandma, and her always positive attitude. We were fortunate to have her in our lives so long.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert and her husband Warren. Survivors include her daughter Marlys (Dave) Vinton of Indianola; grandchildren, Eric (Brenda) Vinton of Indianola, and Kim Williams of North Liberty; and great-grandchildren, Elly Vinton, Kaleb Williams and Wyatt Williams.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 17, 2017 at 2 PM at Urbandale United Church of Christ: 3530 70th St, Urbandale. Memorial contributions may be made to Urbandale United Church of Christ or to Center Chapel United Methodist Church in Indianola.

The family would like to thank The Village retirement community and WesleyLife Hospice for their loving care.
