Mark Odegaard

March 14, 1961 - July 11, 2016

Mark A. Odegaard, 55, passed away July 11, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines . Mark enjoyed bike riding , canoeing, and spending time with family and friends who will all greatly miss him. He enjoyed trips to boundary waters, picnics at Big Creek, taking his nieces and nephews to movies, and walking his cat, or walking/  biking with his dogs at Gray’s Lake just to name a few.

Mark has always been dedicated to helping others. His friends and family knew he was only a phone call away. Mark was well known in the Nepali community for the relationships developed while volunteering his time to help them adjust to a new culture. It began when Mark saw one of his neighbors from Nepal laying clothes out on their front lawn to dry Mark decided to put up a clothesline for them. They were so thankful and it wasn’t long before they treated him like family. Mark noticed many of his friends from Nepal didn’t have a drivers license so he took it upon himself to teach one of his friends how to drive. He ended up teaching over one hundred of his friends to drive and succeeded in getting them a license.

Mark retired from the Laborers Local 177 in March of 2016. He was preceded in death by his father, David Odegaard and mother, Sharon Garner. He is survived by siblings, Melody Pearce, Jim Odegaard, Julie Chumbley, Holly Fazio, and Kelly Garner as well as many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life visitation will be held at Brooks Funeral Care , 7975 University Ave. , Clive, IA on Monday, July 18th, 2016 from 6-8 pm.  Memorials may be directed to the family.
