Marjorie J. Parlee

Marjorie Jean Parlee, 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on May 7, 2017 surrounded by her family. A celebration of her life will be held at Aurora Avenue Bible Church, 5 NW Aurora Ave, Des Moines on Friday, May 12 at 11:00, with visitation time beginning at 10:00. There will also be visitation from 5pm to 8pm on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Merle Hay Funeral Home

Marjorie was born April 1, 1928 in Madrid, Iowa to Angeline Carris Smithson and Morton McKinley Smithson. She grew up in Linden, Iowa where she graduated as valedictorian. During high school, Marj loved singing in Glee Club, playing basketball, and driving the tractor on the family farm. After high school, she moved to Des Moines and worked for Central Iowa Insurance Company.

A new chapter began for Marj when she married Brady in 1953. From 1957 to 1964, they had six children. In 1970, Brady became ill and went home to be with the Lord. Marj was a stay-at-home mom with no driver’s license in an era in which that was common. She got her driver’s license, and went to DMACC and became a LPN. She raised their six children by herself, while working nights at Lutheran Hospital, where she gave excellent care to her patients until she retired at age 65. Her dedication to and love for her children was evident to all who knew her, and she always credited the Lord for giving her strength and provision.

Marj is survived by her sisters, Eileen Goodrich and Helen Crowl; children; Mark Parlee (Patti), Jon Parlee (Pam), Marie-Anne Parlee, Grace Parlee, Jim Parlee (Kris), and Steve Parlee (Kim); grandchildren Ryan Parlee (Jessica), Stacie Johnson (Marcus), Erica Parlee, Reggie Collette, Ben Collette, Jason Parlee (Brandi), Brittany Parlee, Andrew Lamb (fiancé Jessie), Steven Kennedy (Jasmine), Laticia Kennedy; great-grandchildren are Noah, Caleb, Naomi, Isaiah, Lydia, Anna, Levi, and Luke Parlee; Peter and Abel Johnson; Mason and Carter Collette, and Hunter and Evan Collette.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Angeline and Morton Smithson, her brothers, Dale Smithson and Ted Smithson and great-grandaughter Taylor Parlee.

Memorials may be directed to Aurora Avenue Bible Church in loving memory of Marjorie.
