Margaret Welsh

December 9, 1925 - June 7, 2016

Margaret Ruth Welsh, 90, passed away on June 7, 2016 at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines, IA. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 10, 2016 in the Scottish Rite Park Penthouse, 2909 Woodland Ave., Des Moines. The visitation will be held from 9:30a.m-10:30a.m. in Room 153 at Scottish Rite Park. Interment at the Greenfield Cemetery in Greenfield, IA will be held at 2 p.m. on the same day.

Margaret was born on a farm east of Greenfield, IA to Charles and Jeannette Pinkerton Lilly.  She graduated from Greenfield High school in 1944, Drake University with a B.S. in Education in 1956 and an M.S. in Education in 1959.  Margaret was a Teacher and a counselor in the Des Moines Public Schools for 40 years receiving the Teacher of the Year Award in 1987.  She used her teaching and mission skills on every continent by working with people of many cultures.

Margaret was a charter member of the Heartland Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder from 1996-1999.  She represented the Presbyterian Church Coordinating Team for the Synod of the Lakes and Prairie for Women from 2005-2008.  A special award was given to her for her work with abused women and children. She was also a 40 year member of the Valley Junction Chapter of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1982.

Margaret is survived by her son, Phil (Carol) Hoffman; grandson, Kevin Hoffman; two nephews and one niece; along with many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ralph Lilly and Bruce Lilly.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Heartland Presbyterian Church or to the Margaret Lilly Welsh Scholarship Fund at Drake University.
