Madilyn Kay Allender of Johnston, Iowa, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016, with several family members by her side.
Madilyn was born to parents James and Beatrice Nesbitt on February 26, 1934 in Burlington, Iowa. She attended Burlington High School. In 1951, she married Harry Allender and the couple had four children. Madilyn was instrumental in the formation and success of Harry’s career in civil engineering and enjoyed her time staying home and caring for her family. After raising her children, Madilyn served as a Welcome Wagon greeter and later worked with Community Greetings. Madilyn loved welcoming newcomers to Johnston. She was active in the Johnston Schools with the PTO and served the community as a volunteer. Madilyn’s biggest joy was having her family around and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to garden and spent many summers tending to her flowers. .
Madilyn is survived by her husband, Harry, children Bob (Annette), Susan (Jon), and John (Debbi); grandchildren Corrine (Scott), Elizabeth, Scott (Emily), Matt, Brian, and Kate; and great-grandchildren Samantha and Rori. She was preceded in death by her brother James Nesbitt and her parents James and Beatrice.
A memorial visitation will be held to honor Madiyn’s life on Thursday, November 3, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Merle Hay Funeral Home. A private family service will follow at a later date.
