During high school Lee drove a school bus.  After high school Lee attended Upper Iowa University and University of Northern Iowa.  In 1950 Lee enlisted in the Air Force with most of his time spent overseas in the Hawaiian Islands, serving as a Unit Supply Sergeant.  Lee met Evelyn Thomas in Hawaii where she was stationed in the Navy. Lee and Evelyn were married on February 15, 1953.  Lee was honorably discharged in December, 1953.  Lee, Evelyn and son Tom returned to Dysart, Iowa, where Lee eventually became a partner with Merle Olson at Community Service Agency.  Lee retired in 1990.  Lee and Evelyn enjoyed the Dysart United Methodist Church in Dysart.  They were both involved in Sunday school teaching at Dysart. Lee and Evelyn began wintering in Florida at Paradise Park in Punta Gorda. They enjoyed the First United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda. Lee enjoyed Sunday School and going out to eat with friends after church.  When Evelyn died in 2000, they were married 47 years.

Lee enjoyed Boy Scouts and cub scouts, Lyon’s Club, square dancing, WBBCI airstreaming for 19 years, and being President of the Iowa unit in 1978, real estate, and built a 16 unit apartment complex which provided senior citizen housing for 24 years in Dysart.  At Paradise Park Lee helped provide sound for many events, was a member of a group of Iowa men called “Corndogs,” who would do repairs around the park for free, but Lee will best be remembered as the morning coffee guy who helped set up coffee in the big building for anyone to come and enjoy coffee and a little conversation.

Lee passed away on Monday, May 15th quietly in his sleep at the Cedar Valley Hospice House in Waterloo, Iowa.  He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn, his parents, his sister Betty and his brother Robert “Bob,” his mother and father-in-law, Maude and Silas Thomas of Vernon, Alabama, his sister-in-law, Doris Butler of Vernon, Alabama, and nephews Spencer Knight and Jacob Jones of Alabama.
