Karen Ann King

Karen Ann King, 77, died Monday, April 9, 2018 at Calvin Community in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Central Presbyterian Church.

Karen was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Sylvia and Carlyle Knutson. She graduated from Lincoln High School. She received her RN degree at Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids. Karen married Bill King in 1961. Family was the center of her life. She loved being a mother and grandmother; she loved nothing more than spending time together. She also enjoyed the companionship of our family dogs. Karen’s laughter was contagious and she was a friend to many.

Karen’s life work was in making the lives of all children better. She spearheaded a movement to create healthy childcare options for all children in Iowa. In 1987 Karen received the YWCA Woman of the Year award for her professional contribution to the advancement of women in Des Moines.

Karen is survived by her husband, Bill, her daughters, Julie (Matt), Kristin, Megan Hunicke (Brian), and Jenny Fenton (Dave). She had ten grandchildren: Emma, Taj, Jake, Kiane, Mariana, Will, Merrin, Calvin, Sawyer, and Carson. She was preceded in death by her son, Jeff. Our family finds great comfort in knowing that she is with him now.
